• Steve Coleman & Five Elements - Def Trance Beat

Steve Coleman (alto saxophone); Ravi Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Andy Milne (piano, keyboards); Reggie Washington (electric bass); Gene Lake (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Craig Handy (tenor saxophone); Matthew Garrison (electric bass); Michael Wimberly (djembe, cowbell); Jalal Sharriff (djun djun); Kwe Yao Agyapan (bongos, congas, djun djun, djembe); Ronnie Roc (bongos, talking drum) Come hear saxophonist-composer-bandleader Steve Coleman and his group, Five Elements. This concert launches the tour for their first U.S. CD release of the decade, Harvesting Semblances and Affinities. First inspired by the Chicago saxophone sounds of Von Freeman, Bunky Green and other jazz greats, Coleman’s impact on today’s music is considered by many as significant as John Coltrane’s to the mid-20th century. And if that’s not enough, Harvesting is this group’s “strongest and prettiest record in more than a decade,” says the New York Times. Down Beat (8/95, p.51) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...Together with Reggie Washington's slap-happy electric bass, [drummer Gene] Lake's mid-tempo backbeats, modified with displaced accents, give DEF TRANCE BEAT a pervasive hip-hop feel..."
